From the ages of 7 to 23, I played softball, slow pitch, and women’s fastball. I had the time of my life; the only thing that I would dream of at that time, was hoping for the possibility to be able to pursue women’s sports professionally. Back in those days, there were no professional women’s sports. You could only play recreational.
Times have changed.
I learned so much playing this sport, but the one thing that stands out in my mind is my Dad. My Dad was a baseball fan! He would attend every game I had! I was the Pitcher in baseball, so I felt the pressure to be my best, but the teams I was fortunate to be on, worked with such chemistry – we were a well oiled machine!
Being a Pitcher, I would occasionally receive the gift of a line-drive to the ankle; those did not tickle. The odd time, it would bring me to my knees, and I would be helped off the field. One time, the pain was so bad, my coach thought I may have broken something and urged my Dad to drive me to the hospital. They helped me into the vehicle, my Dad drove around the block and said, “shake it off!!”, and then before I knew it I was back on the field.
The funny thing is, is that when he told me to, “shake it off”, I wasn’t sure if it was the shock of the pain, or the shock of hearing him say that, but regardless it worked! I learned very quickly the power of mind over matter!
We all go through physical pain at times in our lives, but since experiencing the “shake it off” episode, I have found myself applying that technique to when I find myself in pain. I giggle every time this happens, because to my disbelief, it constantly works and never lets me down.
Don’t get me wrong, depending on the severity of the pain, at the very least, my mind will start controlling how the rest of my body reacts to it, which then makes it more manageable.
The brain will constantly surprise us; it is learning to control how we use it for the better. In those three words, “shake it off”, taught my brain a lesson that day! One I will never forget.
